At Salmons Brook, students are engaged in a structured programme of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) from Year 7 through to Year 11. This provision supports our students in preparing for adulthood and the world of work by building their aspirations, confidence, and career readiness.

Our careers programme is fully aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks, ensuring that all learners benefit from a high-quality, coherent, and future-focused approach to career development. Careers education at Salmons Brook is tailored to meet the needs of our students with EHCPs, supporting them to make informed and ambitious choices about their next steps.

All learners take part in a programme that helps them to:

  • Understand education, training, employment, and progression opportunities
  • Develop skills to help them plan and manage their own development and career pathways
  • Access and evaluate relevant, up-to-date information
  • Learn from real-world activities, visits, and experiences of workplaces
  • Build the skills needed to succeed in adulthood, including communication, resilience, and independence

Careers Education in the Curriculum

Career-related learning is explicitly embedded within several curriculum areas. In particular:

  • Character, Personal Development, and Life Skills lessons deliver key career competencies and employability skills.
  • Careers awareness is also linked across the wider curriculum, including subjects such as Design Technology, Catering, Computing, and PE, where students explore vocational pathways, transferable skills, and industry contexts.

Resources and Support

Students have access to careers information that is:

  • Easy to find and conveniently available in school and online
  • Unbiased, impartial, and regularly updated
  • Personalised through 1:1 guidance from qualified careers advisors who visit school regularly

Work-Related Learning and Experiences

We promote meaningful work-related learning through:

  • Careers interviews and coaching
  • CEIAG-focused lessons and form time activities
  • Workplace visits, employer engagement events, and university trips
  • Work experience placements
  • Workshops on CV writing, job applications, and interview skills

Gatsby Benchmarks 

Salmons Brook School measures its careers provision against the eight Gatsby Benchmarks. This is reviewed annually using the Compass+ evaluation tool and informs future development priorities. 

 

Destinations 

Students move on to a range of destinations including: 

  • Further Education colleges 

  • Vocational training 

  • Apprenticeships 

  • Supported internships 

  • Employment with training 

Destination information is reviewed annually to ensure students are prepared effectively for adulthood.
